Farmflo user wins big at 2015 Malting Barley Excellence Awards
Farmflo user Gerald Kelly took home top prize at the Malting Barley Excellence Awards 2015 at the Guinness Storehouse.
Congratulations to our very own Gerald Kelly who took home the top prize at the 2015 Malting Barley Excellence Awards last week (Wednesday, November 25).
Gerald, a Farmflo user from Co. Wexford, Ireland, was presented with the Guinness Perpetual Cup at the Guinness Storehouse by Andrew Doyle, TD.
“I am delighted to be in the Guinness Storehouse today to win this Malting Excellence Award,” said Gerald, a third generation barley grower. “I take huge pride in knowing that the product that we grow goes on to be part of this great brewing tradition.”
Also speaking at the event, Colin O’Brien, Operations Director at Diageo said that he was proud of the contribution it made to the rural economy in Ireland, as well as across the world.
“It is great to be at the Malting Excellence Awards today to recognise the crucial role that Irish farmers play in producing quality malt, enabling the production of premium product for export across the world.”
According to O’Brien, Diageo remains committed to the brewing industry and this is evident from their recent expansions. Diageo have been able to open two new brewery’s in the last two years. 2014 seen the opening of Brewhouse No.4 and this year they have launched Open Gate Brewery. Both these new establishments are at the forefront of sustainable brewing, supporting Ireland’s agricultural sector.
In related news, Farmflo partners Boortmalt came in second in the 2015 Bord Bia Food and Drink Awards last month.
The event, which was hosted at Dublin’s Mansion House on November 12, saw Boortmalt come in just behind joint winners Glanbia Ingredients and Island Seafoods in the Sustainability Award category.
According to Tom Bryan, Boortmalt Technical Manager, “sustainability is the life and blood of the business, environmentally, socially and economically for our 600 farming farmers, employees and customers.”
